Ready for a New Year

2011 was awfully good to me, I must say. The best part by far was getting engaged to my best friend, but a new job and a new apartment didn’t hurt the overall outcome of the year either. 2012 is certainly going to be a big year in my life, and I’m looking forward to it. Seth and I decided to spend this last day of 2011 in Philadelphia at the Reading Terminal Market where we sampled lots of gourmet foods and picked up a few things for our New Years Eve meal at home.

Luckily, our new apartment is only one block from the train station that takes us right into Center City. We passed the time by taking a few pics with Seth’s iPhone. I can’t wait to get mine in a few weeks!

 

We got to the market and immediately set out to find some lunch. There are SO many choices there, it’s hard to decide on what to eat. Inevitably, our eyes are always bigger than our stomachs. We had an amazing turkey wrap with russian dressing from a Lancaster Farms deli stand. I always feel better eating meat from them because I feel like it’s less likely to be laden with chemicals. True? I have no idea.

We browsed the seafood and meat as well; Seth wants to make fish tacos for our New Years Day dinner tomorrow evening, so we debated buying the fresh fish there.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

After lunch, we visited the Flying Monkey bakery and got their signature Monkey Bar. It’s a peanut butter cookie base, then a layer of caramel and caramelized bananas, topped with a cookie crumble. It was delicious! I am definitely planning on re-creating this at home in the near future.

 

I ate half and saved the rest for Seth, but it is currently calling my name from the kitchen and most likely won’t make it past the next hour.

We decided to get a few good cheeses to have tonight while cuddling on the couch and watching the ball drop. DeBruno Brothers is known in Philadelphia for having unbelievable cheeses, so we paid them a visit next. I’m planning to make quesadillas tonight using some leftover crockpot rosemary chicken (recipe coming soon!), so I wanted a good cheese that would pair well with that. The owner recommended a rosemary crusted cow’s milk cheese, so we picked that up along with some extra soft brie and sundried tomatoes.

 

We added some dried cranberries to the brie to give it a little sweetness and are currently munching on that now. I don’t think it will last very long 🙂
